Eco-Park in the Konopelka River Valley

    Lutsk 2025

Development of a strategy for the Konopelka River Valley, focusing on preserving existing and restoring degraded wetlands. The subsequent creation of an eco-park that integrates conservation, educational, rehabilitation, and recreational functions, contributing to ecosystem preservation and community engagement.

The area is part of the Styr River Valley— a zone of special environmental significance within the Emerald Network of the Council of Europe. Our attention was drawn to this site by the Youth Council of the Pidhaitsi Village Council. Together, we have already conducted the first participatory event.

The valley is distinguished by its picturesque landscape and rich ecosystem. At the same time, the local population has established a beach in the area. This year, it was overwhelmed by external visitors, leading many respondents to express a desire to create another beach “for locals” through similar efforts. However, new swimming areas may induce demand, resulting in further beach overcrowding and additional pressure on the ecosystem.

Engaging residents in the project is crucial to increasing overall awareness of sustainable development, jointly unlocking the site’s potential, identifying and preventing possible threats, and realistically aligning community needs with available natural resources. The implementation strategy includes conducting an environmental assessment, defining conservation zones, developing a functional plan (without detailed specifications), participatory workshops with the community, and targeted tactical pilot implementations.

The ultimate outcome is a development strategy for the area and its subsequent implementation through the establishment of an eco-park. The strategy is necessary for several reasons:

The NGO “MISTO.PEREZAVANTAZHENNYA” is implementing the project in collaboration with the Pidhaitsi Youth Council, with the support of the Pidhaitsi Village Council, particularly its Department of Capital Construction and Investment Activities. Olha Kobylianska, the department manager, is one of the key project team members.
